Abstract

Kenneth Anger’s surrealist films have received widespread attention from the academic community, but the specific relationship between his innovative expression techniques and his multiple functions has not been fully explored. This article analyzes how the surrealist technique of anger serves as a tool for personal identity expression, social criticism, and spiritual transformation, as demonstrated in Fireworks, Scorpio Rising, and Eaux d’Artifice. Through a detailed analysis of his dreamlike non-linear narrative, montage techniques, and visual abstraction, this study reveals how Anger’s complex manipulation of surrealist methods creates multi-layered films that transcend traditional boundaries. Research has shown that Anger’s innovative expression techniques are closely related to its thematic purpose, establishing a framework of surrealist technology as both an artistic method and cultural intervention. This study suggests that understanding the relationship between technological innovation and thematic influence in Anger’s works provides valuable insights for contemporary experimental filmmakers seeking to address personal, social, and spiritual issues through avant-garde cinema.
